WIRE(1)

NAME

wire - create a BRL-CAD database of wires or fuel lines

On this page

SYNOPSIS

wire

DESCRIPTION

wire creates a BRL-CAD geometry database (.g) describing a run of solid wires or fuel lines. It runs strictly interactively, taking no command-line options or arguments; if any argument is supplied it prints a usage message and exits.

The program prompts for the output database name (default wire.g if left blank), the number of wire segments (1 to 100), and the coordinates of the start and end points together with the radius at each point of every segment. Each segment is built as a truncated general cone (the tgc primitive) so that the radius may taper from one end to the other, and adjacent segments are joined with spheres to round the joints. The resulting solids are collected into regions and unioned into a group named wires. All values are interpreted in millimeters.

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Build a three-segment wire and raytrace it
wire <<EOF
hose.g
3
0 0 0
.25
0 5 -3
.25
0 10 -3
.25
0 12 -2
.25
EOF

rt -o hose.png hose.g wires

Feeding the interactive prompts from a here-document creates hose.g containing a three-segment wire of constant 0.25 mm radius whose segments are joined by spheres, then renders the resulting wires group to an image with rt(1). Only the first segment requires a starting point; each later segment continues from the previous endpoint.
