DPIX(5)

NAME

dpix - Double-precision RGB image file format

On this page

FORMAT

A dpix file is a headerless raster image containing red, green, and blue samples. Each pixel occupies 24 bytes: three 8-byte IEEE-754 binary64 values in red, green, blue order. Each value is stored most significant byte first (big-endian, or network byte order), independent of the byte order used for doubles in host memory. There is no padding between samples or pixels.

The first pixel is the lower-left corner of the image. Pixels proceed from left to right across each scanline, and scanlines proceed from the bottom to the top of the image, matching the ordering of pix(5).

DPIX does not encode image dimensions or a required sample range. Renderers ordinarily produce values between 0.0 and 1.0, but the format can retain values outside that range for subsequent exposure or other processing. A reader must therefore be given the width and height by some external means. The file size for an image of width w and height h is w * h * 24 bytes.

UTILITIES

rt(1) writes DPIX renderings with its -O option.

dpix-pix(1) exposure-maps a DPIX image into an 8-bit pix(5) image.

icv(1) reads, writes, and converts DPIX images.

pixautosize(1) can infer dimensions from a DPIX file when given a 24-byte pixel size.
