COIL(nged)

NAME

coil - create a coil spring geometry object

On this page

SYNOPSIS

coil [-d mean_outer_diameter] [-w wire_diameter] [-H helix_angle]
     [-p pitch] [-n number_of_turns] [-s start_cap_type] [-e end_cap_type]
     [-S coil_data_structure] [-l overall_length] [-L] [name]

DESCRIPTION

The coil command creates a coil spring geometry as a combination of pipe and cylindrical primitives in the database. An optional name may be provided; if omitted, the object is named coil.

All dimensional parameters are in the current working units unless otherwise noted.

Options

-d mean_outer_diameter

Mean outer diameter of the coil. Defaults to 10× the wire diameter if unspecified. If both are zero, defaults to 1000 (with wire diameter defaulting to 100).

-w wire_diameter

Diameter of the coil wire. Defaults to 1/10 of the mean outer diameter if unspecified.

-H helix_angle

Helix angle of the coil in degrees. Affects the pitch of the winding relative to the axis. (Unsupported when -l is used.)

-p pitch

Distance between adjacent turns along the coil axis. Must be ≥ wire diameter; if smaller, it is automatically set to the wire diameter.

-n number_of_turns

Number of full coil turns.

-s start_cap_type

End cap style at the start of the coil: 0 = open (no cap), 1 = squared, 2 = squared and ground.

-e end_cap_type

End cap style at the end of the coil. Same values as -s.

-l overall_length

Constrain the coil to a total axial length. When set, pitch and/or number of turns are adjusted automatically to fit. Caps are forced to open (0) and helix angles are ignored.

-L

Use left-hand winding (default is right-hand).

-S coil_data_structure

Advanced: provide an explicit section data structure to override the automatic coil generation.

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Create a default coil

mged> coil

Creates a coil spring named coil using default dimensions.

Example 2. Create a named coil with specific dimensions

mged> coil -d 50 -w 5 -p 6 -n 10 spring1

Creates a 10-turn coil spring named spring1 with a mean outer diameter of 50 units, wire diameter of 5 units, and pitch of 6 units per turn.

Example 3. Create a left-hand wound coil with caps

mged> coil -d 100 -w 10 -n 8 -s 2 -e 2 -L lh_spring

Creates a left-hand wound coil with squared-and-ground end caps.
