DBOT_DUMP(nged)

NAME

dbot_dump - export currently displayed BOT objects to a mesh file format

On this page

SYNOPSIS

dbot_dump [-b] [-n|--normals] [-F|--full-precision]
          [-m|--output-directory dir] [-o|--output-file file]
          [-t dxf|glb|gltf|obj|sat|stl] [-u unit]
          [--no-materials]

DESCRIPTION

The dbot_dump command exports the currently displayed BOT (Bag-of-Triangles) objects to an external mesh file. Unlike bot_dump, which takes explicit object names or operates on all BOTs in the database, dbot_dump operates on the set of objects currently drawn in the MGED display.

It automatically passes --displayed, --viewdata, and --materials to the underlying bot_dump implementation:

  • --displayed — restricts export to currently drawn objects.

  • --viewdata — writes view-related metadata alongside the geometry output.

  • --materials — includes displayed color/material information in the output.

No BOT names are taken as arguments; the set of objects to export is determined by the display list.

All other options are identical to bot_dump, including --no-materials to explicitly suppress color/material export.

Options

-b

Write output in binary format where supported.

-n, --normals

Write per-vertex normals if the output format supports them.

-F, --full-precision

Write full floating-point precision for coordinate values where supported. glTF and GLB reject this option.

-m dir, --output-directory dir

Write each BOT to a separate file in the specified directory dir. Mutually exclusive with -o.

-o file, --output-file file

Write all output to the single specified file. Mutually exclusive with -m.

-t fmt

Specify the output format type: dxf, glb, gltf, obj, sat, or stl (default: stl).

-u unit

Output coordinate units (e.g., mm, cm, in, ft).

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Export all currently displayed BOTs to STL

mged> draw hull.bot turret.bot mged> dbot_dump -o displayed.stl

Draws two BOTs, then exports them both (with view data and displayed color/material info) to displayed.stl.

Example 2. Export displayed geometry to OBJ format

mged> dbot_dump -t obj -o scene.obj

Exports all currently drawn BOT objects to Wavefront OBJ format, including displayed color/material properties.
