ROT_ABOUT(nged)

NAME

rot_about - get or set the point about which view rotations are performed

On this page

SYNOPSIS

rot_about
rot_about e|k|m|v

DESCRIPTION

The rot_about command gets or sets the pivot point used when rotating the view. The pivot determines the fixed point in space around which the camera orbits when rotation commands (such as rot) are applied.

  • No arguments: Returns the current rotate-about setting as a single character (e, k, m, or v).

  • One argument: Sets the rotate-about point to the specified single-character mode. The argument must be exactly one character from the set e, k, m, or v. Any other value returns a usage error.

Rotate-about modes

Mode Description

e

Eye point — rotate about the eye (camera) position. The scene orbits around the viewer’s current location.

k

Keypoint — rotate about the current keypoint. The keypoint is typically the center of the last selected or edited object.

m

Model origin — rotate about the model coordinate system origin (0, 0, 0).

v

View center — rotate about the center of the current view (the point at the center of the display window).

EXAMPLES

Example 1. Get the current rotate-about mode

mged> rot_about

Returns the current rotate-about mode character, e.g. v if rotating about the view center.

Example 2. Rotate about the model origin

mged> rot_about m

Sets rotations to orbit around the model coordinate origin (0, 0, 0). Subsequent rot commands will pivot about that point.

Example 3. Rotate about the view center

mged> rot_about v

Sets rotations to orbit around the center of the current display window. This is the most common interactive setting.
